Responding to the Flooding in Hollister, MO–assistance still available at Branson Corps

Branson, MO (August 13, 2013) The Salvation Army remains ready to assist Hollister-area flood survivors and others impacted by last week’s flooding disaster.

“We will remain ready to help the families that were victims of the flood through referrals from Red Cross,” Lt. Shawn DeBaar, Branson Corps Officer and Incident Commander, said.

Last week, The Salvation Army began providing immediate assistance to those in need from its Emergency Disaster Services mobile canteen. The canteen traveled throughout impacted areas delivering meals, snacks, drinks, and supplies directly to survivors, clean-up crews & first responders.

The Salvation Army was also the lead agency in charge of serving daily meals at Hollister’s Red Cross shelter located at the New Beginning’s Fellowship Church – 151 Elm St. The Red Cross closed the shelter today at 3 pm.

During the primary five-day relief response, The Salvation Army provided 562 meals, 274 drinks, and 259 snack items to those in need as well as assisted four individuals with spiritual & emotional counseling. In total, Salvation Army Officers, staff and volunteers served 116 hours helping the community.

In-kind donations were received from a variety of area business and organizations including Harter House, Walmart Supercenter Branson, Hook & Ladder Pizza Company, First Baptist Church in Branson, College of the Ozarks, Five Oaks Farm, Rib Crib and First Baptist Church of Kimberling City.

“The community was extremely generous with donating food for our feeding operations,” DeBaar said.

So far, The Salvation Army has distributed nearly $2,000 worth of monetary assistance to area residents. However, that amount will likely increase as The Salvation Army’s response efforts continue.

A limited number of clean-up kits are still available at The Salvation Army’s Branson Corps – 1114 Stanley Blvd. For more information please call (417) 339-4434.

In-Kind Donations:
Please remember that due to the high expense and amount of time associated with delivering in-kind gifts, such as gently-used household items and clothing, The Salvation Army cannot guarantee at this time that any individual donated gifts-in-kind will be sent to the disaster area. During times of disaster, The Salvation Army is able to meet the need for these items from its thrift store’s existing, pre-sorted stock. Therefore, by continuing to donate gently-used household goods to your local Salvation Army thrift store, you not only help your local community, you help The Salvation Army prepare for future disaster relief needs.
