Salvation Army Teams Provide Fast Response to November Tornadoes in the Midwest

Severe weather throughout the Midwestern US began early Sunday afternoon, with tornadoes tearing through several cities.

According to, at least one person died in Nashville, Illinois, as a result of the severe storms, said Patti Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. Nearly 50 tornadoes had been reported throughout the region as of 4 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

As of 3:10 p.m. (CST) Captain Jeff Carr of The Salvation Army in Peoria, Illinois reported that canteens (mobile kitchens) had been deployed to three nearby areas, including Washington, Ill., which was heavily damaged. Carr also reported that The Salvation Army had opened a shelter in Pekin, Ill.

Additionally, Major David Dalberg, Emergency and Disaster Service Director for The Salvation Army’s Metropolitan Chicago Division reported that canteens were responding to damaged areas in Will County, Ill., near Chicago.

At the time of the writing of this bulletin, there are tornadoes reported in Kentucky and Indiana. The weather pattern is expected to continue moving into Michigan and Ohio. The Salvation Army is already on the ground and prepared to help disaster survivors.
